What is ENS

We are a grassroots group of residents who are connecting to help promote positive community dialogue and transparency in decisions that affect everyone in our community. We are working to help create a healthy, inclusive community where everyone thrives.

Our Story

Engage North Smithfield (ENS), was started in 2017 by a small group of residents who were inspired to promote connection among residents. ENS evolved into a non-partisan platform for civic participation and the sharing of ideas about town matters that directly affect the health and well-being of all residents.

For the first year, the group existed mostly as a social media forum for conversations around art, community, recreation and public health. ENS has evolved into a movement to help ourselves and fellow residents become more civically engaged. We consider our work deeply transformational. We have facilitated community workshops on topics such as the town’s comprehensive plan, our energy infrastructure, various land use issues, open space, shared community values, and more.

The ENS network is currently comprised of residents who attend regular monthly meetings and plan and attend potlucks, organize community education, attend council, board and commission meetings and share information about timely issues. ENS utilizes both in-person meetings and gatherings as well as social media to engage the community in intentional dialogue about  community topics of interest.

Members agree and often disagree in their positions on controversial topics but share a goal of fostering engagement and greater transparency in town matters. To those ends, ENS hopes to bring more interest and participation in town boards and commissions and promote attendance at Town Council and other board and commission meetings. We believe that the more engaged the public, especially residents who until now have had the least voice, the better the outcome will be for everyone.
